East Cooke Road

NEW WORKSHOP! This workshop takes place on Sat. March 28 at 1-3 PM Discover the delicate beauty of etched brown-egg pysanky, a different spin on the traditional Ukrainian art form. In this hands-on class, students will transform a brown egg into a work of art by carefully removing layers of shell to create patterns and symbols, with fine detail. Participants will be guided step-by-step through the entire process, including preparing the egg, applying wax, etching with vinegar and safely removing the wax to reveal the design. Emphasis is placed on patience, precision, and understanding traditional motifs, while also encouraging personal creativity. This class is suitable for beginners and those with some pysanky experience. All materials are provided, and no prior etching experience is necessary. Students will leave with at least one finished etched egg and the knowledge to continue the technique at home. The origin of Pysanky is believed to have been with Cucuteni–Trypillia culture of Eastern Europe over 5,000 years ago. The giving of decorated eggs in European cultures has continued to this day. In this class, you will receive a brief history of the art of Ukrainian Easter Eggs or Pysanky, an overview of the wax resist process, instruction in design and hands-on egg writing. Class size is strictly LIMITED to 12 students. You'll be working with color dyes, bees wax, and open flames; please dress accordingly and tie back long hair. This class is not appropriate for children. Vinegar-Etched Pysanky Workshop takes place on Sat. March 28 at 1-3 PM. Interested in a different Pysanky technique? Denise is offering a traditional dye-colored PYSANKY class on Friday, March 27 at 6:30-9:00 PM and Saturday, March 28, at 9:00-11:30 AM. INSTRUCTOR: Denise Beno has always been fascinated by Faberge eggs and Ukrainian egg art and was naturally drawn to this art form. She attributes this to her Eastern European ancestral roots. While Denise was a poultry farmer, she picked up a basic pysanka kit and taught herself the craft of Pysanky. She has been crafting eggs for almost 20 years, typically gifting them to family and loved ones. You can purchase her eggs and other artwork at www.Etsy.com/shop/thepeaceturtle/.
