Paper-Making With Invasive Plants
Available spots.
Are you ready to discover the ancient and sustainable craft of papermaking? Join us for an immersive 4-hour workshop that blends the fascinating history of papermaking with the unique ecological challenge of invasive plants in Ohio. Whether you're a seasoned paper maker or a beginner, this hands-on workshop will deepen your understanding of papermaking and inspire you to think differently about nature and conservation. This workshop will explore how *invasive plants* can be repurposed for papermaking and transformed into beautiful, functional art. Jamie will guide you through the fascinating history of papermaking, examining traditional fibers and introducing the scholarship of Indigenous scientist Jessica Hernandez. Hernandez’s perspective on invasive species as "displaced relatives" challenges the common conservation mindset and encourages us to rethink our relationship with nature. Step-by-Step Learning: ● Start with an introduction to the history and techniques of papermaking. ● Learn about the types of fibers traditionally used in paper and how we can apply Hernandez's teachings to see invasive species in a new light. ● Watch a live demonstration of sheet forming with the pulp from Ohio’s invasive plants. ● Once you’ve mastered the basics of sheet forming, experiment with papermaking techniques such as incorporating botanicals, creating seed paper, and making collage artwork. All materials, including pre-processed invasive plant pulp, will be provided. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have your handmade paper sheets ready for pickup after they’ve dried and been pressed overnight. You’ll leave with your creations and a deeper understanding of how art, nature, and sustainability intersect. Materials fee $20 + class fee $100 = $120 Come for a fun and enriching experience with like-minded individuals, and leave with new skills, connections, and a renewed perspective on the environment and your creative potential! INSTRUCTOR: After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Jamie Hoy discovered her artistic voice by integrating her passion for art and her affinity for gardening and the natural environment. In Columbus, she plays a vital role as a co-leader of the Columbus Hand Paper Makers, an organization dedicated to fostering connections among local papermakers and creating a platform for knowledge exchange and celebrating the craft.
