Native Plant Propagtn: Shrubs & Seeds

[** DROP US A NOTE if you want to join our WAITLIST for a second session of this class! info@ColumbusGardenSchool.com] Did you know that autumn/winter is a “prime time” for plant propagation, or creating new plants from seeds and cuttings? In this HANDS-ON introductory workshop, you’ll learn techniques to grow new wildflowers, natives grasses, and shrubs from your existing plants at almost NO cost. The workshop has two sessions. For one hour, you’ll learn how to identify and collect viable seed from our prairie area at CGS. Plants include asters, coneflowers, ironweed, milkweed, native grasses, and more.* We’ll discuss winter stratification (cold dormancy) methods, plus tools and materials that lead to successful spring seed germination. During the next hour, you’ll learn how to make hardwood cuttings of deciduous shrubs including shrub dogwood, forsythia, ninebark, viburnum, and willow.* You’ll practice making pruning cuts, using rooting materials, and placing the cuttings into a growing area. *We’ll use plants that are seasonally ready for propagation. Everyone takes home up to three small envelopes of seeds they harvest, plus up to 6 hardwood cuttings. Bring your own pruning snips to make cuttings (or you can borrow the school set). Workshop is IN PERSON at the Columbus Garden School, 1350 E. Cooke Rd, Columbus OH 43224. We’ll meet in the parking lot. Limited to 12 students taught by 2 instructors. Dress appropriately for outdoor weather and uneven ground. Register ASAP - this class is only offered once a year! INSTRUCTORS: Bernadett Szabo lives in Pataskala, OH on a small herb, flower and vegetable farm. She was born in Hungary, and once in Ohio, Bernadett joined OEFFA to deepen her knowledge of growing food and medicinal crops. She follows deep organic practices with some biodynamic principles on her homestead. Bernadett teaches a variety of classes at CGS including herbalism, foraging, bread-making, food preservation, and plant propagation. Her business is Bernadett’s Farmacy. Tisa Watts, a garden educator and public speaker with 20+ years of experience, has a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design. She is the founder of the Columbus Garden School (CGS), which offers year-round workshops on gardening, homesteading, home maintenance, and crafting topics.
