Grow GORGEOUS Dahlias!

Dahlias are popular flowers not only because of their beauty but also because of their endless variety of colors, shapes, and sizes! Dahlias are excellent, long-lasting cut flowers and they photograph beautifully. Often used in weddings and in tabletop arrangements, they’ll also look gorgeous in your garden and in bouquets -- and make you the envy of your neighbors! While not the easiest flower to grow, they thrive in Ohio’s hot summers and will have you hooked with your first spectacular bloom. Topics we’ll discuss include: • Selecting dahlia tubers ( how, where, and when) • Dahlia classification (size, form, and color) • Site selection and preparation • Planting, growing, disbudding, and disbranching • Watering, staking, and fertilizing • Materials and tools needed • Pest control • Overwintering (to be discussed in-depth in our fall class) This in-person class will include demonstration of materials, planting, and staking in the CGS garden (weather permitting). Tubers may be available for purchase from the instructor after class. INSTRUCTOR: Isla Murden is a pediatric Occupational Therapist by profession, but has an equal passion for growing and photographing dahlias. Born and raised in Grove City, Ohio, Isla comes from a long line of English gardeners. She was introduced to growing dahlias over 25 years ago while attending a spring plant sale. A member of the Greater Columbus Dahlia Society enticed her to their booth and she’s been growing dahlias in her suburban Worthington gardens ever since! She aspires to complete the Master Gardener training in the next few years.
