Northern Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica): I cannot say enough GREAT things about this feel-good plant. We have it planted in at least a half-dozen places around the school property. Why? Because it's tough, adaptable, and the deer and rabbits absolutely do NOT touch it! We planted it, watered it a few times, and it's been trouble-free ever since. It makes a great screen.
Glossy, semi-evergreen leaves appear on a rounded, multibranched shrub that grows to about 6-8 feet. Small, gray berries appear on the stems in the fall. Crush the fragrant foliage, stems, or berries and you'll understand why it's been used to scent candles and soap. This shrub has drought, erosion, high winds, salt spray, poor soils, and wet site tolerance. In optimum conditions, this shrub suckers easily and forms colonies. Happiest in full sun but will take some shade.
Don't tell the others, but this is our FAVORITE shrub at CGS.
