In the early years of the century, the painter Alfred Parsons was commissioned by Ellen Ann Willmott, a wealthy gardening enthusiast, to illustrate her monumental book of roses, The Genus Roasa. These are his watercolor paintings.
The commentary by Graham Stuart Thomas, a distinguished authority on the subject, outlines the history of garden roses and describes the history and attributes of each rose depicted.
[NOTE: The individual color plates are gorgeous. A clever person might find a way to spotlight each one.]
