Rain Gardens Workshop at GIAC

Managing water that gushes from your roof or streams over ground is becoming more important as our weather patterns change. The infrastructure of our cities and nature – water treatment plants, sewers and waterways – are becoming inundated with water overflows. Rain Gardens are a way that homeowners can help while beautifying their yards and offering food for wildlife. This workshop offers the basics on how to get started with placing, sizing, and selecting plants for a rain garden in your own front or backyard. Concepts that will be covered: — why create a rain garden? — how do you calculate the size? — where do you put it? — how do you construct a rain garden? — which plants can deal with too much water and too little water? — how do you manage/maintain a rain garden once it is created? SPECIAL NOTE: This workshop is held at the beautiful and eco-friendly Grange Insurance Audubon Center in downtown Columbus, OH. This site, once a polluted brownfield and now a LEED Gold-certified building site, incorporates numerous green technologies and features. INSTRUCTORS: Known as “The Garden Sage”, DEBRA KNAPKE is passionate about gardening, sustainable garden design and the natural world, and enjoys sharing knowledge through her writing, public speaking, and garden consulting in the private and public sectors. She has served on local and national committees and boards that focus on education, the environment, and sustainability. In addition, she has mentored the future of the landscape industry at Columbus State Community College for 24 years. She loves being a gardener and has packed an amazing variety of perennials, trees, shrubs, and edibles onto the 2/3-acre lot surrounding her home. TISA WATTS is the founder of the Columbus Garden School, located on 2 acres of demonstration gardens, fruit trees, and native plants on East Cooke Road. She’s an educator and public speaker with 20+ years of professional experience in horticulture, landscape design, and edible gardening.
