Over-Wintering Your Dahlias

Starts Oct 20
25 US dollars
East Cooke Road

Available spots.

Dahlias are popular flowers not only because of their beauty but also because of their endless variety of colors, shapes, and sizes! Dahlias are excellent, long-lasting cut flowers and they photograph beautifully. Now that you’ve admired your beautiful dahlias all summer and been the envy of your neighbors, you’d like to know how to keep these beauties alive to grow again NEXT year. This class is for those who are already growing dahlias and want to learn about the various storage methods that are suitable for successfully over-wintering dahlia tubers in Ohio. What works in the Pacific Northwest or on the East Coast may not work well here in Ohio. We will discuss all the steps involved in digging, cleaning (or not), dividing (or not), checking for diseases, and storing your dahlia tubers. Dahlias are indeed the plant that keeps on giving, year after year, if you know how to care for the tubers! Protect your investment and perhaps even share your extra tubers next year. * If conditions permit, we will have a demonstration of digging dahlia tubers in the CGS gardens. INSTRUCTOR: Isla Murden is a pediatric Occupational Therapist by profession, but has an equal passion for growing and photographing dahlias. Born and raised in Grove City, Ohio, Isla comes from a long line of English gardeners. She was introduced to growing dahlias over 25 years ago while attending a spring plant sale. A member of the Greater Columbus Dahlia Society enticed her to their booth and she’s been growing dahlias in her suburban Worthington gardens ever since! She aspires to complete the Master Gardener training in the next few years.
