Native Plants for Residential Landscapes
Available spots.
Turn your backyard into a pollinator paradise (and a destination for songbirds and other wildlife) by adding some “powerhouse” native plants. Add long-term, low-maintenance beauty to your landscape with tough native shrubs, trees, perennials, and grasses. We’ll discuss familiar favorites like purple coneflowers and oakleaf hydrangeas, but you’ll meet new treasures like blue vervain, winterberry, and the pagoda dogwood! WHY CHOOSE NATIVE PLANTS over conventional nursery stock? While providing food and habitat for native pollinators and other wildlife, native plants are best suited to our Ohio climate and clay soil conditions. This reduces on the need for water, fertilizer, and pesticides. Native plants are often more deer-resistant than conventional, non-native plants. Class attendees will receive detailed plants lists, general care guidelines, and local resources to help you find your new favorite NATIVE plants. ** After the presentation, we'll take a walking tour and view many native perennials, shrubs, trees, and grasses in the landscape at the Columbus Garden School. We'll touch on adaptability and deer resistance. Please bring your camera, questions, and photos -- and get fresh ideas for your garden! ** INSTRUCTOR: Tisa Watts is the founder of the Columbus Garden School. She’s a landscape designer, educator, and public speaker with 20+ years of professional experience and a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design. Her passion is helping Columbus residents restore beauty and backyard biodiversity to our neighborhoods.
