Garden Planning & Design with Deb Knapke
The idea of designing a garden may seem daunting, but there is a process that helps you plan and create a place that is yours. This class is a design primer that covers the design process, soil basics, ecological aspects of the garden and how to create beautiful, functional spaces. There will even be a few designs thrown in that you can make your own. BEFORE CLASS: 1. Choose a place you wish to design, change, tweak 2. Take pictures of the place you wish to change. Take from 1) head on 2) on either side 3) far away and 4) close-ups 3. Next: > observe (write down) what is there: low spots, high spots, overgrown shrubs, empty spaces, downspouts, faucets, windows, power lines (underground/overhead), fences, trees/tree roots, hardscape: patios-sidewalks-decks-driveway-arbors, etc., outbuildings (garage), pet area, etc. > analyze (write it down) what problems need to be solved: drainage, compaction, need entertainment area, need “utility” area, need lawn, don’t want to see neighbors, current gardens “not working, etc. > brainstorm ideas (write it down) maybe draw? PLAY! on plain paper, on trace - available at Office Supply stores OR wait until the class and play there. > think about what plants you would like to have, or are your favorites; if plants do not come to mind, think about the colors you like/do not like; what is your favorite season (when do you want the show) BRING TO CLASS: > a straight edge (ruler), a pencil or two or three (mechanical is best & extra leads for mechanical pencil), eraser (I prefer the white eraser), ¼” graph paper (11” X 17” or 8.5” X11” works, available from office supply stores), plain paper -- optional: architect’s scale, colored pencils, trace paper (instructor will bring some) NOTE: This is a three-hour class, and limited to 10 students. INSTRUCTOR: In 1992 Debra Knapke turned her avocation of plant study and gardening into her full-time career. Known as “The Garden Sage”, Debra is passionate about gardening, sustainable garden design and the natural world, and enjoys sharing knowledge through her writing, public speaking, and garden consulting in the private and public sectors. She has served on various local and national committees and boards that focus on education, the environment, and sustainability. She loves being a gardener and has packed an amazing variety of perennials, trees, shrubs, and edibles onto the 2/3-acre lot surrounding her home.
