The Theory and Practice of Garden-Making Our garden-making series examines the why and how of three garden styles. We'll explore these gardens through the lens of design principles, garden history, and practical aspects. Each class will focus on personalized garden design and plant selection for each style. Design 1 – THE HERB GARDEN Herbs are often the gateway to gardening! Along with being useful in many parts of our lives – for cooking, cleaning, health, and more – they are EASY TO GROW. Most are widely adaptable to a variety of garden conditions. We'll cover the habits and cultural preferences of numerous herbs that are perfect for Ohio gardens. Debra will discuss soil, sun/shade preferences, garden prep, and seasonal maintenance for these “plants of use”. Design 2 -- THE CUTTING GARDEN Flowers have the power to change our moods and lift our spirits. They also send messages through meanings that we've attached to them over time. While this garden type may result in a beautiful place, it is often more utilitarian in structure and management. Learn the tricks of arranging flowers by color, care, and maintenance for a POWERFUL impact. Design 3 -- THE CONTAINER GARDEN Container plantings are miniature, movable gardens that allow us to garden in small spaces or create accents in larger gardens. They can be outrageous or subdued, harmonious or dissonant. The design possibilities are only bound by your imagination and budget. It's easy to be overwhelmed with options at the garden center; this class will guide you to great choices. ** Our series of 3 workshops is just $119. That's 6 hours of expert instruction! ** Design 1: The Herb Garden 2/16/25 (2-4 PM) Design 2: The Cutting Garden 3/9/25 (2-4 PM) Design 3: The Container Garden 4/27/25 (1-3 PM) * All classes meet on Sunday afternoons at CGS. Debra's workshops fill QUICKLY; please register ASAP to avoid disappointment! Each class is limited to 12 students. INSTRUCTOR: DEB KNAPKE is passionate about gardening, sustainable garden design and the natural world, and enjoys sharing knowledge through her writing, public speaking, and garden consulting in the private and public sectors. She has served on various local and national committees and boards that focus on education, the environment, and sustainability.
