Food Preservation and Intro to Canning

JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL 3-HOUR WORKSHOP on ways to savor your summer harvest during the winter months! Bernadett and Tisa will teach you about canning, dehydrating, and other methods of food preservation you can do in your own kitchen. While you sample homemade goodies during this IN-PERSON workshop, you’ll learn many tips and tricks about preserving delicious fruits, veggies, and herbs from two experienced instructors! Part 1: PRESERVING THE HARVEST Veggies are overtaking your countertops, herbs are waiting to be processed. Let's not waste all the hours you spent growing and caring for those plants. Come and learn what should go in the freezer, what should be canned, and what should be dried. Students will help load and see an electric dehydrator in action. We’ll talk about ways your favorite medicinal and culinary herbs can enrich your life long after the lush, green garden days are gone. Participants will go home with confidence in their ability to tackle the piles of home grown goodies and a delicious herbal finishing salt we will prepare during the class. Part 2: INTRO TO CANNING There are two widely used home-canning methods: water-bath canning and pressure canning. During class, we’ll do a step-by-step demonstration of water-bath canning of fruit jam or salsa. Students are encouraged to participate in the process of food preservation by working with the canning tools and equipment. Students receive handouts on basic preservation methods and easy recipes to try at home. We’re expecting lots of Q&A and laughter during class! This class will fill quickly; please register ASAP to avoid disappointment. CHOOSE YOUR SESSION during registration (same class/different times): Session 1 - Sunday, June 30 at 10 AM - 1 PM -- OR -- Session 2 - Sunday, June 30 at 2 PM - 5 PM INSTRUCTOR: Bernadett Szabo lives in Pataskala, OH on a small herb, flower, and vegetable farm. She was born in Hungary where she spent summers in her grandmother’s gardens. Once in Ohio, Bernadett joined OEFFA to deepen her knowledge of growing food and medicinal crops. She follows deep organic practices with some biodynamic principles on her homestead. Her business is Bernadett's Farmacy. Tisa Watts is the founder of the Columbus Garden School, located on 2 acres of demonstration gardens, fruit trees, and native plants on East Cooke Road. She’s an educator and public speaker with 20+ years of professional experience in horticulture, landscape design, and edible gardening.
